Bamboo Leaves Shoji Lamp
We are excited to announce that we just received our shipment of new Shoji Lamps from Thailand. For those of you that are not familiar with Shoji Lamps, Shoji’s literal definition is a screen made of a wooden frame with rice paper. In Chinese and Japanese, the word Shoji means “something to obstruct” and generally refers to shoji screen walls.
Shoji was actually invented by the Chinese, but the concept was imported to Japan between the 7th and 8th century. It wasn’t until the 12th century that the Japanese popularized Shoji as a form of artwork. Shoji paper is traditionally made from mulberry paper, but is more often found as rice paper in modern times. Our lamps use mulberry paper where leaves are imprinted and rice paper for lamps with printed artwork.
These lamps add a unique Asian touch to any room and give off a soft glowing light. They are also all priced under $30, so they are affordable too! They look great in a living room or even better on two bedside tables!

Coming up with unique holiday gifts is no easy task. So, here we will start a series of blogposts on unique gift ideas for the holidays. Our first suggestion is a Japanese Sake Set. For anyone who loves culture and especially Japanese culture a sake set is a must-have. Beside the obvious use of enjoying a warm bottle of sake with sushi, sake sets can even make for an interesting decorative accent. You can display the set on an empty shelf or nook in your kitchen or even in your entertaining room or bar room. Most sake sets come in nice gift boxes so the presentation of the gift can match the beauty of the gift itself!

I am always on the lookout for unique and inexpensive wall decor. In general, if you are looking for something to cover that large empty space on your wall you had better be prepared to spend a little if you want anything decent. While the curtains on the site – www.jun-gifts.com -can run upwards of $500, you can find very unique designs for only $30-$40. You will have to pay $15 or so for shipping from Japan, but they are still very afforable. Japanese Noren curtains are made for doorways, but they look great on a wall too. They are made from silk, cotton and hemp. The hemp curtains are generally the nicest…and most expensive.

I decided to start this blog to help chronicle all the unique design finds I come across online and to share thoughts and images from my travels around the world. I follow a lot of very interesting blogs on design (check blogroll on right) and I am hoping this blog will offer a bit of different flavor. You see, I have a passion for travelling. I love discovering new places and cultures. And one of the things I like about these new places is their design. I get very inspired by the creativity of places like Thailand and Bali. I started The Travelled Home (www.thetravelledhome.com) about 2 years ago to showcase the unique decor design from places like these. And I am hoping that this blog will serve as an outlet for the thoughts and experiences that feed The Travelled Home.
So, thanks for visiting and come back soon!!
